385B and 5090B (3) Vital Information Display System ECM (4) Machine Control ECMThe following components are located in the compartment behind the cab: The Vital Information Displays System ECM and the Machine Electronic Control ECM .The engine control and these electronic controls can communicate with each other through the CAT data link. Information from these electronic controls can be accessed through the VIDS message center or by using the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) on a laptop computer.

The connector for the Cat ET ( 385B and 5090B)Connect a laptop computer with the software for the Cat ET to the connector for the CAT Data Link. The Cat ET is used to obtain diagnostic information. The Cat ET is also used to program numerous functions on all of the electronic controls.The following references should be used to locate the electrical components and connectors: the Electrical System Schematic, the Parts Manual and the Operation and Maintenance Manual.The following information is a guideline to reading: the charts for Harness Connectors, the charts for Component Locations, the area views and the machine profile. All of these components can be found on the back of the Electrical System Schematic.Component Location Chart - The component location chart uses white circles as location labels in the machine profile and area views. The letters in the column for the "machine location" indicate a general area of the machine.
