To prevent possible personal injury, make sure all the pressure in the steering system is released before any hoses are disconnected.
View From Under Machine1. Drain the oil from the steering system hydraulic tank in a suitable container. The capacity of the steering system hydraulic tank is 83 liters (23 U.S. gal).2. Disconnect hose assemblies (2) and (3) from the steering pump. Cap and plug all connections to prevent oil loss.3. Remove two bolts (1), and the washers. Remove the steering pump.4. Remove the O-ring seal from the steering pump. Check the O-ring seal for wear or damage, and replace if necessary. The following steps are for installation of the steering pump.5. Put the O-ring Seal in position on the steering pump.6. Put the steering pump in position on the machine as shown, and install two bolts (1) that hold it.7. Connect hose assemblies (2) and (3) to the steering pump.8. Fill the steering system hydraulic tank with oil to the correct level. Start By:a. remove steering pump Fluid Spillage ContainmentCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools and Shop Product Guide, NENG2500", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. 1. Remove O-ring seal (1) from the pump. Thoroughly clean the outside of the pump. Put an alignment mark across pump components for assembly purposes prior to disassembly.
Do not damage the surface of the pump when the pump is installed in a vise.
2. Put the pump in position in a vise with soft jaws as shown. Remove eight bolts (4) and the washers. Remove any burrs or sharp edges from drive gear shaft (3). Put a thin layer of grease on the shaft. Keep flange assembly (2) as straight as possible, and lift flange assembly (2) off the pump body. 3. Remove O-ring seal (5) from the bottom of the flange. Check the two shaft bushings in the flange assembly for wear or damage, and replace if necessary. 4. Remove the first of two lip seals (6) out of flange assembly (2). Use Tool (A) to remove retaining ring (7) from flange assembly (2). Remove the second lip seal (6) from flange assembly (2). 5. Remove upper isolation plate (8), ring retainer (9), O-ring seal (7) and back-up ring (6) from the pump body. 6. Lift the drive gear until upper pressure plate (10) is removed from the pump. Put the drive gear back in position in the pump, and remove pressure plate (10). 7. Remove drive gear (11) and idler gear (12) from the pump body.
Use care when lower pressure plate (13) is removed. Keep the pressure
