Information:
The Power Train Electric Drive System will contain hazardous voltage levels during machine operation and for a short period of time after engine shutdown.Do not remove any covers that will expose energized high voltage electrical components while the engine is operating.Any type of maintenance on the following components can only be performed after the Power Train Electrical System Service Shutdown procedure has been followed:
High voltage compartments in the inverter cabinet
The rear axle housing that contains the electric drive traction motors
The generator
The retarding resistor grid, the grid blower motor and the grid system cabling
The excitation field regulator
The high voltage cables and connection enclosuresFailure to follow these instructions could result in personal injury or death.
In order to prevent damage to components, the power train high voltage system must be shorted to the cabinet ground before welding can be performed anywhere on the truck.
Note: The user is responsible for supplying the parts for the jumper wires, and constructing the jumper wires. All jumper wires should be assembled by using typical 12 Guage wire, and appropriate clips.Proper welding procedures are necessary to avoid damage to electronic controls. When welding is performed on any machine or any engine with electronic controls, comply with the following steps.
Park the machine on a level surface and stop the engine. Make sure that the shift control lever is in the N position.
Prepare the machine by performing the electrical shutdown and voltage discharge procedure. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Electrical Shutdown and Voltage Discharge" for the proper procedure to prepare the machine.
Move the battery disconnect switch to the OFF (open) position. The OFF (open) position is the position for service or storage of the machine.

Attach a jumper wire in order to connect DC power bus positive "DCP" cable connection (AA), DC power bus negative "DCN" cable connection (AB), and ground boss (AC) that is on the upper right-hand side of the retarding contactor compartment.
Connect the ground cable for the welder directly to the member of the actual machine that will be welded. Place this clamp as close as possible to the weld in order to reduce the possibility of welding current damage to the bearings for the drive train, hydraulic components, electrical components, or other machine components.
Do not use electrical components (ECM sensors) or electronic component ground points for grounding the welder.
Protect any harnesses from any debris or any splatter from welding.
Use standard welding procedures to weld the materials together. The machine is now prepared for welding. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS1841, "General Welding Procedures" for additional information on welding.
After the welding has been completed, remove the jumper wires from the retarding contactor compartment and close the cover on the compartment.
