Do not check for leaks with your hands. Pin hole (very small) leaks can result in a high velocity oil stream that will be invisible close to the hose. This oil can penetrate the skin and cause personal injury. Use cardboard or paper to locate pin hole leaks.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
While performing operational checks, listen for abnormal noises from the transmission, pumps, motors, axles, and brakes.
Check the machine oil levels and check for leaking components.
Release and engage the parking brake and listen for unusual noises. The parking brake operation should be heard in the cab when operated.
Operate the machine in FORWARD and in REVERSE in all ranges and ensure that the machine is reaching the correct speed in each range.
Operate the machine in the FORWARD direction. Ensure that the machine decelerates in the first half of brake pedal movement. Ensure that the service brakes are operating during the second half of brake pedal movement. Ensure that the brakes stop the machine within an acceptable distance.Refer to Troubleshooting, "Symptom Procedures" for more information regarding any problems encountered during operational checks.
