Introduction
A restriction in the air inlet system causes a reduction in the horsepower, engine efficiency, and overheating. Check for air inlet restriction
Reference: Refer to SENR6457 for additional information. Results:* OK - STOP.* NOT OK - Replace leaking gaskets, etc. in air system. If inlet manifold pressure is low, make sure a 35 API rated fuel is used and that there is no restriction in the air inlet or exhaust. Clean the primary air cleaner element. After the element is cleaned, reinstall the element in the air cleaner housing and reset the filter indicator. If the air filter indicator piston moves into the red zone after starting the engine or the exhaust smoke is black, it may be necessary to replace the primary element. Normally the primary element can be cleaned up to four times before needing to be replaced. If after replacing the primary filter the problem still exists, replace the secondary element. Do not attempt to reuse the element by cleaning it. STOP.
