System Response:Note: An incorrect harness code that is connected to the Caterpillar® Monitoring System can cause the 650-2 code to be recorded. Ensure that the 650-2 code is on hold and that the diagnostic code indicator shows "SERV CODE". Test Step 1. CHECK THE MACHINE CODE ON THE MONITORING SYSTEM
Enter harness code mode (Mode 1) of the Caterpillar® Monitoring System.
Check that the machine code that is showing matches the sales model. The machine codes are listed below: D11R ... 29 or 28D10R ... 27D8R DS ... 15D8R Series II ... 12 or 15D8R Series II European Spec ... 46 or 47D7R ... 30572R ... 30D7R DS ... 24D7R Series II ... 35572R Series II ... 35D7R Series II European Spec ... 45D6M ... 20D6R Series II ... 33D6R Series II PSDD ... 34D6R Series II European Spec ... 43D6R ... 18D6R PSDD ... 19D5M PSDD ... 16D5M ... 17D6M ... 20D5N ... 06561N ... 06D6N ... 23D6N DS ... 41D6N LPG ... 41Expected Result:The two digits of the machine code should match the sales model. Results:
OK - The machine code is correct. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The harness code plug is not correct. Repair: Repair the harness code plug of the monitoring system or replace the plug with the correct plug. See Service Manual, RENR2014, "Caterpillar Monitoring System". STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE CONFIGURATION OF THE HARNESS CODE PLUG FOR THE POWER TRAIN
Remove the harness code plug from the harness. The harness code plug for the power train is located near the ECM.
Inspect the harness code plug for corroded connector contacts. If necessary, clean the connector contacts.
Measure the resistance between contact 6 of the harness code plug and each of the other contacts. Some of the spaces for contacts in the plug are intentionally empty. Compare the values that are measured with table 1. An open circuit should measure more than 5000 ohms. A grounded circuit should measure less than 5 ohms. If a particular machine is not listed, see the Electrical System Schematic of the particular machine to determine the configuration of the contacts of the harness code plug.
