Assemble Hydraulic Track Adjusters
1. Make sure all parts of the hydraulic track adjuster are clean and free of dirt and debris prior to assembly.
Install back-up rings (2) and (3) and O-ring seals (1) on piston (4) in the positions shown in Illustration E35967. Back-up rings (2) and (3) can be identified by their color. Back-up ring (2) is brown. Back-up ring (3) is black. Do not interchange the position of the back-up rings and O-ring seals. When piston (4) is installed in cylinder (8), be sure to keep it square to prevent possible cylinder damage to the back-up rings and O-ring seals.
2. Completely fill the piston seal grooves with 5P-0960 Multipurpose Greasein order to allow the grease to flow out when the seals are installed.3. Install O-ring seals (1) and back-up rings (2) and (3) on piston (4) as shown in Illustration E35967.4. Install relief valve (5) and fill valve (6) in the body of cylinder (8). Tighten fill valve (6). Do not tighten relief valve (5).5. Put a small amount of 5P-0960 Multipurpose Grease on the sliding surface of piston (4) and a minimum of 60 cc (4 cu in)of grease on the flat end of the piston. This will prevent air from getting in the cylinder during installation of the piston. Make sure the grease covers back-up rings (2) and (3) and O-ring seals (1).6. Apply 5P-0960 Multipurpose Greaseto the inside diameter of cylinder (8).7. Fill bottom cavity of cylinder (8) with 5P-0960 Multipurpose Grease.Do not fill the counter bore cavity for the relief valve and fill valve with grease.8. Make sure back-up rings (2) and (3) and O-ring seals (1) are in the grooves of piston (4). Center the piston in cylinder (8). Insert the piston in the cylinder. It may be necessary to use a soft faced hammer to install the piston in the cylinder.9. Make sure grease is expelled from the vent hole of relief valve (5). Tighten relief valve (5) to a torque of 34 5 N m (25 4 lb ft). 10. Add approximately 5 cc (0.3 cu in) of 5P-0960 Multipurpose Greasethrough fill valve (6). Apply a force to piston (4) and open fill valve (6) in order to purge all the air. Tighten fill valve (6) to a torque of 34 5 N m (25 4 lb ft).11. Apply 5P-0960 Multipurpose Grease in the lip seal groove at the end of the cylinder. Install lip seal (9) until it is even with the outside surface of the cylinder or not more than 1.0 mm (.04 in)below the outside surface of the cylinder.12. Reinstall stopper plate assembly (7) and the two bolts which hold it.
