FLUID SPILLAGE CONTAINMENTCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "TOOLS AND SHOP PRODUCT GUIDE, NENG2500", for Tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. 1. Move the machine to put the drain plug (2) in the position shown. Remove drain plug (2), and drain the oil from the final drive.2. Remove the bolts and cover assembly (1). Check the O-ring seal in the cover for wear or damage. If necessary, replace the seal. 3. Remove axle (4) and sun gear (3) from the axle housing. If the axle cannot be removed. Move the machine a small amount to the front or rear until the axle can be pulled from the differential and final drive. 4. Use Tool (A), and remove retainer ring (6) from the axle.5. Remove sun gear (3) and washer (5) from the axle.Install Axles (Front & Rear)
1. Make sure the axles are clean and free of dirt and foreign material.2. Put axle (1) in position in the axle housing. 3. Install washer (2) on the shaft. 4. Use a socket and extension to help seat the axle in the differential gears as shown. If gear (3) cannot be installed, move the wheel a small amount to the front or rear until the gear can be installed. Carefully use a bar to lift up on the axle behind gear (3) until the gear can be installed.5. Put gear (3) in position on the shaft and in the final drive. 6. While holding gear (3) in place, slide axle (1) out enough so the retainer ring can be installed. 7. Use Tool (A) to install the retaining ring in the groove. 8. If necessary, because of wear or damage, replace button (7) in cover (5).9. Turn the flat sides of three shafts (8) toward the outside as shown to give clearance to the counterbore in cover (5).
If the cover does not fit flat up against the final drive without force, remove the cover and repeat Step 9.
10. Put clean oil on O-ring seal (6), and install cover (5).11. Install the O-ring seal on plug (9), and install the plug in the final drive.12. Fill the final drives with oil to the correct level. See the Maintenance Manual.
