16. Use two 3/8" - 16 NC forged eyebolts, and fasten a hoist to the pinnion assembly. Install two 1/2" - 13 NC guide bolts in the carrier housing.17. Do not install the O-ring seal around the pinion housing at this time.18. Install the original thickness of shims (8) on the carrier housing, if the original gears, carrier assembly and housing are being used again. If any of these parts are replaced, install 80% of the original thickness of shims. Shim pack (8) thickness may have to be changed when adjusting the tooth contact pattern (backlash)19. Install the pinion assembly. Make sure the hole in pinion housing (2) is in alignment with pin (9). Install the bolts that hold the pinion assembly. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 135 15 N m (100 11 lb.ft.).
Make sure the grooved side of washers (10) are against gears (11) and pinions (12).
20. Install two washers (10) and two gears (11). Install two washers and two pinions (12). Rotate the gears and pinions until shaft (13) can be installed through the washers and pinions (12). 21. Install dowel (14) through the hole in shaft (13). 22. Install a new lock (15) and bolt (16). Bend the tab of lock (15) against one of the flats on bolt (16). 23. Heat bearing cones (17) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F), and install them on each end of the differential case. Make sure bearing cones (17) are against (seated) the shoulder of the differential case.24. Put bevel gear (18) in position on the differential case. Install new bolts (19). New bolts (19) that hold the differential case to bevel gear (18) are coated with Loctite Dri-Loc 200. Install new bolts (19), and tighten them to a torque of 135 15 N m (100 11 lb.ft.). If the original bolts are reused, use the following procedure:a. Use 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer to clean the threaded holes in bevel gear (18).b. Put 9S3265 Retaining Compound in the threaded holes of bevel gear (18).c. Install the original bolts that hold the differential case to bevel gear (18), and tighten them to a torque of 135 15 N m (100 11 lb.ft.). 25. Fasten a nylon strap and a hoist to the differential assembly. Put clean differential oil on bearing cones (17). Install bearing cups (20) over the bearing cones to prevent damage during assembly.26. Put the differential assembly in position in the carrier assembly with bevel gear (18) on the side opposite dowel hole (21) in the carrier assembly. 27. Install bearing caps (22) and bolts (23) finger tight. Install bearing adjuster nuts (24). Bearing adjuster nuts (24) must turn freely after they are installed.28. Tighten one of bolts (23) on each cap to a torque of 70 N m (50 lb.ft.). Tighten the other bolt on each cap to a torque of 5 N m (4 lb.ft.).29. Tighten both bearing adjuster nuts (24) evenly until there is a
