Assembly Procedure
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Place the lifter body (1) in a hydraulic press.
Apply engine oil to the internal bore of the lifter body (1) and the adapter bores (2). Press the adapter (2) into the body (1). The top of the adapter should be flush with the top of the body (1) after assembly.
Illustration 2 g00570916Note: Place shims between the lifter and the roller when the pin is installed. This is necessary in order to prevent the forks on the body from bending.
Place the roller (5) between the forks of the lifter (4). Place both parts in a press with the lockwire groove on the top side.
Install the wire in the pin (3) with equal excess on each side.
Lubricate the pin (3) with clean engine oil.
Align the wire with the groove on the fork of the lifter (4).
Press the pin (3) into the lifter (4) and the roller (5).
Install the pushrod insert in the lifter body (4).
Raise the temperature of the intake lifter body and raise the temperature of the exhaust lifter body to 177 °C (350 °F). Lower the temperature of the pins to −60 °C (−76 °F).
Always wear protective gloves when handling parts that have been heated.

Install a new guide spring (9) and guide spring (11) on the lifters. Note: If the guide springs were removed from the valve lifters, the guide springs must not be used again.

The roller is not installed on the valve lifter that is shown in the illustration.
Install the insert (13) in the body (14) with the lifter cup that faces outward. Install the new O-ring retainer (12) in order to hold the insert in place.
Immerse the following lifters in clean engine oil: (7), (8) and (10).
Install the valve lifter (7) and the valve lifter (10) in the original positions. Install the valve lifters so that the guide spring will be in the proper position. Note: Use large pliers in order to compress the guide springs (11) so that the valve lifter assemblies can be installed in the body of the valve guide (6).
Install the gas admission valve lifter (8). End By:
Install the valve lifter assembly.
Install the push rods.
Check the valve lash.
