Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Procedure for the Tractor
Illustration 1 g00927615Secondary fuel filter (2) for the tractor is mounted on the front of the hydraulic tank. The secondary fuel filter is on the right side of the engine compartment below the primary fuel filter.
Park the machine on a level surface.
Lower the bowl.
Shut off the engine.
Move fuel valve (3) to the CLOSED position.
Clean secondary filter (2). Clean filter base (1) which is located above the filter.
Turn the filter to the left in order to loosen the filter. Loosen the filter with a strap type wrench.
Remove the filter. Clean the bottom of the filter base. Make sure that all of the old filter seal is removed.
Apply clean diesel fuel to the seal of the new secondary filter.
Install the new filter by hand. When the seal contacts the base, tighten the filter for an additional 3/4 turn. Rotation index marks are positioned on the filters at 90 degree intervals. Use these rotation index marks as a guide when you tighten the filter.
Return the fuel valve to the OPEN position.
Purge the air from the fuel system. See the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" for further instructions. Note: The fuel system water separator also needs to be changed at this time. See Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System Water Separator Element - Replace".
Start the engine and check for leaks. Procedure for the Scraper

Park the machine on a level surface.
Lower the bowl.
Shut off the engine.
Move fuel valve (4) to the CLOSED position.
Clean secondary filter (5). Clean filter base (6).
Turn the filter to the left in order to loosen the filter. Loosen the filter with a strap type wrench.
Remove the filter. Clean the bottom of the filter base. Make sure that all of the old filter seal is removed.
Apply clean diesel fuel to the seal of the new secondary filter.
Install the new filter by hand. When the seal contacts the base, tighten the filter for an additional 3/4 turn. Rotation index marks are positioned on the filters at 90 degree intervals. Use these rotation index marks as a guide when you tighten the filter.
Return the fuel valve to the OPEN position.
