Fluid Spillage ContainmentCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. Put identification on all lines, hoses, wires and tubes for installation purposes. Cap and plug all connectors, lines, hoses and tubes to prevent the loss of oil and keep foreign material from entering the system.
At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the implement hydraulic circuits (boom, stick, bucket, and swing), the travel circuits, and the hydraulic oil tank at the breather cap before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed. Remove the filler plug only when the engine is stopped and the filler plug is cool enough to touch.
1. Block the vehicle wheels to prevent movement of the machine during work.2. Raise the stub and the fore-boom to allow enough room to work on the boom lowering control device. The stub boom should be almost vertical. Lower the bucket to the floor.3. Release the pressure in the hydraulic system as follows:a. Stop the engine.b. Place the engine start switch key to the "ON" position without starting the engine.c. Move the control levers for the fore boom, bucket, stick, and swing to all full stroke positions. Push down on the front and rear of the stub boom pedal (the first pedal to left of the steering column) several times. This will release any pressure that may be present in the pilot system.d. Slowly move the travel pilot control pedal to "FORWARD" and "REVERSE" travel positions. This will release any pressure in the travel circuit.e. Slowly loosen and remove the breather cap on the hydraulic tank to release the hydraulic pressure.f. Reinstall and tighten the breather cap on the hydraulic tank.g. The pressure in the hydraulic system has now been released. Lines and components can now be removed. While attaching the tooling to the pressure connector of the boom lowering control device, be aware that hydraulic pressure is going to be released and the hydraulic fluid needs to be drained into a suitable container. Keep the drain hose positioned in the hydraulic container during the installation of the hose to the boom lowering control device. The boom, stick and bucket may move slightly when the hydraulic pressure is released.4. Remove the cap from pressure relief connector (2). Connect Tools (A) and (B) together. Install Tools (A) and (B) on pressure relief connector (2) of boom lowering control device (1). Drain the hydraulic fluid into a suitable container for storage or disposal.5. Remove Tooling (A) and (B) from pressure relief connector (2). Install the cap on pressure relief
