Removal Procedure
Start By:
Install the engine lifting brackets. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Lifting Bracket - Remove and Install".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Disconnect the engine from any driven equipment. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Driven Equipment - Inspect/Replace/Lubricate".
Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant - Change".
Drain the engine oil from the engine oil pan into a suitable container for storage or for disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change".

Remove bolts (1) and the washers from flange (2). Remove the flange from engine oil pump (4). Remove the O-ring seals from the flange. Remove tube (3) from elbow (5). Remove the O-ring seal from the joint that is between the elbow and the tube. Dispose of the used O-ring seals.

Remove cylinder block covers (6) .
Attach a suitable lifting device to the engine lifting brackets. The weight of the engine is approximately 36400 kg (80250 lb). Lift the engine. Block up the engine with suitable cribbing.

Note: For Step 7, leave the following 6 bolts and washers installed: one at each corner and one on each side in the middle.
Remove bolts (7) and the washers that attach the engine oil pan to the cylinder block, the front housing, and the rear housing except for the 6 bolts that are specified.

Except for the 6 bolts and washers that are specified, make sure that there are no connections between the engine and engine oil pan (8) .
Attach a suitable lifting device to engine oil pan (8). The weight of engine oil pan (8) is approximately 870 kg (1918 lb).
Carefully remove remaining bolts (7) and the washers. Gradually lower engine oil pan (8). Remove the engine oil pan from the engine.

Remove gasket (9) from engine oil pan (8) .
