Removal Procedure
Start By:
Remove the camshaft gear. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Camshaft Gear - Remove".
Remove the electronic unit injectors. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electronic Unit Injector - Remove".
Remove the valve mechanism cover base. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Mechanism Cover Base - Remove and Install".
Remove the turbochargers. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Turbocharger - Remove".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Do not turn the crankshaft or the camshaft while the camshaft gear is removed. If the front gear group is not correctly timed during installation, interference can occur between the pistons and the valves, resulting in damage to the engine.
Remove bolts (2) and thrust plate (1) .

Remove seal assembly (3) and adapter (4) .

Remove O-ring seal (5) and O-ring seal (6) from seal assembly (3) .

Disconnect hose (7) . Remove tube assembly (8) and tube assembly (9) .
Remove bolts (11) that connect fuel filter base (10) to the cylinder head. Position fuel filter base (10) out of the way.
Disconnect hose assembly (12) .
Disconnect hose assembly (13) .
Remove clips (14) . Position harness assembly out of the way.

Disconnect hose (16) .
Remove strap (17) .
Attach a suitable lifting device to the cylinder head. The weight of the cylinder head is approximately 235 kg (518 lb). Ensure that all of the following items are clear from the cylinder head: harness assemblies, tube assemblies and hose assemblies.
Remove cylinder head bolts (15) .
Carefully remove the cylinder head.

Remove cylinder head gasket (18) , spacer plate (19) , and the O-ring seals.Note: If the cylinder head was removed from the cylinder block as a result of a failed head gasket, refer to Special Instruction, " SEHS9564 3400 Cylinder Head Joint Repair Procedure" for additional information.
