Information:
The following information applies to a Caterpillar MY2007 or later On-highway Engine. Other information that may be helpful can be found in the following publications:
Special Publication, SEBU5898, "Cold Weather Recommendations for All Caterpillar Machines"
Special Publication, SEBU6385, "Caterpillar On-highway Diesel Engines Fluids Recommendations"Hints for Operating in Cold Weather
Before the beginning of cold weather, install the correct lubricant in each compartment.Starting the Engine
Before attempting to start the engine, make sure that the oil is fluid enough to flow. Remove the dipstick. If the oil will drip from the dipstick, the oil should be fluid enough for engine starting. Do not use oil that has been diluted with kerosene. Kerosene will evaporate in the engine and cause the oil to thicken. For easier cold weather starting, make sure that all of the components of the engine electrical system are properly maintained. All electrical wiring and connections should be free of the following: fraying, damaged insulation and corrosion. Batteries should be kept fully charged and warm. The batteries and the battery cables should be the proper size for the application.Engine Warm-up
Whenever a vehicle has been parked for a long time, some of the systems will cool to below normal operating temperatures. Always warm the vehicle systems before operating the machine at full operation.Damage to engine valve control components can result from engine operation for short intervals during operation in very cold-weather conditions. If the engine is not allowed to warm completely, the engine can be damaged by repeated starting and stopping. To avoid valve damage, always run the engine until the coolant temperature is at least 82°C (180°F) to minimize carbon deposits on the valve stems. The engine should be operated at low rpm and low-power demand until the engine reaches normal operating temperature. The engine will reach normal operating temperature faster when the engine is operated at low rpm and low-power demand instead of idling the engine.
To assist in warm-up, block the radiator. Blocking the radiator will restrict air from the fan.
Keep all starting fluid at room temperature. Inject starting fluid only while the engine is cranking.
Provide cooling system protection for the lowest expected outside temperature.
Operate under light load until the systems reach normal operating temperatures.Maintaining the Battery
Personal injury can result from battery fumes or explosion.Batteries give off flammable fumes that can explode. Electrolyte is an acid and can cause personal injury if it contacts the skin or eyes.Prevent sparks near the batteries. Sparks could cause vapors to explode. Do not allow jumper cable ends to contact each other or the engine. Improper jumper cable connections can cause an explosion.Always wear protective glasses when working with batteries.
The temperature of the battery affects the cranking power. When the battery is too cold, the battery will not crank the engine, even though the engine is warm. Keeping the battery warm will maintain at least 70 percent of the cranking power. When possible, keep the batteries warm. Batteries may be stored in a warm environment or the battery compartment can be heated.Whenever the engine operates below the
