Using a suitable lifting device, remove the thumb cylinder from the power link mount on the thumb. Refer to table 13 for cylinder weight.

Using a suitable lifting device, raise the thumb linkage off of the stick.

Thumb cylinder bracket (B) 12 mm (0.47 inch)
Weld the bracket using a 12 mm (0.47 inch) fillet weld as shown. Do not weld across the stick.

(C) 8 mm (0.32 inch)
Weld the stop using 8 mm (0.32 inch) fillet weld as shown. Do not weld across the stick.
Allow the welded area to cool. Prepare the welded area for the application of paint.
Apply a coat of rust prevention and a finish coat to the work area that has been completed. Use Cat authorized paint.
Install the thumb cylinder and connect the auxiliary hydraulic lines to the cylinder following the steps listed earlier. Refer to ""Installation of the Hydraulic Cylinder"".
Ensure that all fasteners are tightened to the proper torque specification.
Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure.Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.
Start the machine, cycle the hydraulics, and check for leaks.Circuit Installation

Failure to properly set the relief pressures and flows may result in damage to the work tool, the host machine, or both. Do not operate the hydraulic thumb until the flows and pressures have been set.
Required Hydraulic Circuit Installation
The hydraulic excavator must be equipped with an auxiliary hydraulic circuit. This circuit will connect the thumb to the attachment spool of the main valve of the hydraulic excavator and allow hydraulic pressure to flow to and from the thumb. This circuit must be a one pump, two direction flow circuit.
Caterpillar recommends utilizing the factory installed auxiliary hydraulic circuit. If your machine is not factory equipped, Caterpillar recommends installing a Cat Field Installed Hydraulic Kit available from your local Cat dealer.
Hydraulic thumbs may be installed in conjunction with a two pump, one direction flow circuit (hammer circuit). The hydraulic thumb is designed to sit idle when this circuit is operating.Hydraulic thumbs are not designed for use with two pump, two direction flow circuits. Do not use this circuit to operate the thumb at higher than recommended flows and pressures.Do not operate a second work tool, such as a hammer or compactor, on the two pump, two direction flow circuit
