start by:a) remove timing gear cover1. Turn the crankshaft until the "C" mark on the crankshaft gear is in alignment with the "C" mark on the crankshaft gear. 2. Loosen bolt (1) and the washer that holds the fuel injection pump drive gear (2) to the fuel injection pump camshaft until the washer is approximately 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) away from the drive gear. Do not remove the bolt at this time. Install tooling (A) on the drive gear. Tighten the screw in tooling (A) until the drive gear is loose. Remove tooling (A), bolt (1) and the washer. Remove gear (2).3. Remove bolts (3), plate and idler gear (6).4. Inspect the bearing in the idler gear. If a replacement of the bearing is needed, remove the bearing from the gear with tooling (B).5. Remove bolts (4) and the washers that hold camshaft gear (5) to the camshaft. Remove the camshaft gear.6. Remove the three nuts and washers that hold the fuel pump to the timing gear cover. 7. Remove six bolts (7) and the locks that hold timing gear plate (8) to the cylinder block. Remove the timing gear plate.Install Timing Gears And Plate
1. Clean the old gasket from the contact surfaces of the timing gear plate and cylinder block. Install a new gasket on the cylinder block. Cut the gasket even with the bottom face of the cylinder block. Put 5H2471 Gasket Cement on the bottom of the gasket where the gasket makes contact with the gasket for the oil pan. 2. Put timing gear plate (1) in position on the cylinder block and install the locks and six bolts that hold the plate in place.3. Install the washers and nuts that hold the fuel pump to the timing gear plate. 4. Install camshaft gear (3) with the "C" mark on the camshaft gear in alignment with the "C" mark on the crankshaft gear. Install the washers and bolts that hold the gear in place.5. Install the bearing in the idler gear with tooling (A). The end of the bearing must be .060 in. (1.52 mm) below the face of the gear hub. Install idler gear (2), plate and the bolts that hold the gear in place.6. Install the fuel injection pump drive gear.
