Connections of the position sensor for the circle sideshift The position sensor of the circle sideshift is located in the assembly of the right joystick. The sensor provides an input signal to the ECM that is dependent on the position of the thumb rocker control button that is located on the joystick handle. The FMI 08 means that the ECM has determined that the signal frequency or the signal pulse width is not within the expected range. The position sensor of the circle sideshift receives power from the 10 V power supply of the Transmission/Chassis ECM and the 10 V power supply of the Implement ECM. The position sensor of the circle sideshift is connected to ground at the 10 V sensor return of the Implement ECM and the 10 V sensor return of the Transmission/Chassis ECM. The sensor will stop functioning if both power supplies and both grounds are lost. The illustration above indicates the power and ground connections for the position sensor.Note: For a schematic of the internal power and ground assignments for each individual component in the right joystick, refer to the Systems Operation, "Features" section of this manual.The position sensor is a PWM sensor that operates at a frequency of 500 100 Hz. The position sensor sends a PWM input signal to the ECM. The duty cycle of the signal will vary from 10% to 90%. The variations in the duty cycle of the signal follow:
When the thumb rocker is at the FULL LEFT position, the duty cycle will be approximately 10%.
When the thumb rocker is at the FULL RIGHT position, the duty cycle will be approximately 90%.
When the thumb rocker is in the CENTER position, the duty cycle will be approximately 50%. The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:
The sensor has failed.
Intermittent connections or poor connections
The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.Note: The correct operating temperature range for the sensor is −40 °C (−40.0 °F) to 75 °C (167.0 °F). When the environment of the cab is at extreme temperatures, an FMI 03 diagnostic code will become active for a sensor or an FMI 08 diagnostic code will become active for a sensor. Standardize the environment of the cab, in order to keep the sensors operating in the acceptable temperature range. After standardizing the temperature to normal, verify that the CID 2156 FMI 08 diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.Before performing this procedure, inspect the harness connectors that are involved in the circuit. Poor connections can often be the cause of a problem in an electrical circuit. Inspect the connections for the following:
Connections are clean.
Connections are secure.
Connections are in good condition.If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem and verify that this diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes.
