Engine News SEBD9311, July 2002, "C-10/C-12/3176C/3196 Front Housing Bolts". Disregard this article. See the article that follows.The front of the engine block has been modified. This modification requires the use of a new front cover gasket and different bolts that attach the front housing to the engine block. The new front cover gasket and different bolts help to provide an improved seal between the front housing and the engine block. The correct bolts need to be used to attach the front housing. Use Table 1 to identify your Type of engine.

If you have a remanufactured engine proceed to "Remanufactured Engines". The following illustrations will provide added information on the installation of the front housing.Check for availability of a gasket kit. The gasket kit will include a new front cover gasket, bolts for Type 1 and Type 2. This kit can be used to service Type 1, Type 2, and Remanufactured Engines.Type 1

204-0712 Bolt The two bolts (Type 1) are 30 mm (1.18 inch) long. Marks on the head of the bolt represent the grade of the bolt. These markings can be seen in illustration 1 and 2. The 6V-2317 Bolt is replaced by 204-0712 Bolt. The 204-0712 Bolt has a torque value of 40 8 N m (30 6 lb ft). 13 bolts are required for the installation of the front housing.Type 2

6V-5219 Bolt The 6V-5219 Bolt (Type 2) has a length of 40 mm (1.57 inch). The bolt for Type 2 is 10 mm (0.39 inch) longer than the bolt for Type 1. The longer bolt is needed due to a deeper counterbore and the tapped hole. Do Not replace the 6V-5219 Bolt with the 204-0712 Bolt or the 6V-2317 Bolt. Damage to the threads could result. The torque on the 6V-5219 Bolt bolt is 35 8 N m (26 6 lb ft). 13 bolts are required for the installation of the front housing.Remanufactured Engines
