Disassemble Turbocharger (Switzer 4MFW711, 4MFW731) (Marine Engine)
start by: a) remove turbocharger 1. Put a mark on elbow (2) and housing (1) for alignment at installation.2. Put the turbocharger in position on tool (A). 3. Loosen "V" clamp (4). Lower clamp and put a mark on cartridge assembly (6) and cover (3) for alignment at installation.4. Remove cover and "V" clamp.5. Loosen "V" clamp (5). Lift clamp and put a mark on cartridge assembly and housing for alignment at installation.6. Remove cartridge assembly from housing and put in a vise. 7. Remove nut and wheel (9).
When nut is removed, do not put a side force on shaft.
If the compressor wheel can not be removed easily, use a press to remove it.8. Remove wheel assembly (7) and shroud (8).9. Remove seal ring from wheel assembly. 10. Remove snap ring (10) from housing (11). 11. Remove insert (12) from housing. 12. Push sleeve (13) from insert. Remove seal ring from sleeve. 13. Remove deflector (14), ring (15), sleeve (16), bearing (17) and ring (18) from housing. Check the oil hole in bearing (17). If the oil hole is not open, this will cause bearing failure. 14. Remove snap ring (19), bearing (20), and snap ring (21). Use tool (B) to remove snap rings.15. Turn housing around.16. Remove snap ring, bearing, and snap ring. Use tool (B) to remove snap rings.17. Inspect all parts and install new parts as needed.Assemble Turbocharger (Switzer 4MFW711, 4MFW731) (Marine Engine)
1. Make sure all oil passages are open and clean. Put clean engine oil on all parts before assembly. 2. Install snap ring (2), bearing (1), and snap ring (3). Use tool (B) to install snap rings. Install snap rings with round side toward bearing.3. Turn housing around. 4. Install snap ring (8), bearing (7) and snap ring (6). Use tool (B) to install snap rings. Install snap rings with round side toward bearing. Put 4L7464 Silicone Grease in the groove for seal ring (10) at assembly to one half or more of the depth of the groove all the way around the groove.5. Install seal ring (10) on wheel assembly.6. Install shroud (9) and wheel assembly (11) in housing (15).7. Put assembly in vertical position with wheel assembly down.8. Install ring (14), bearing (5), sleeve (4), ring (12), and deflector (13) in housing.
The oil hole in bearing must be open and clean.
9. Install seal ring on sleeve (16) and install sleeve in insert (17).10. Install insert in housing and install snap ring. 11. Install wheel (19) on shaft (18).12. Put clean engine oil on threads and install nut. Tighten the nut to a torque of 32 2 lb.ft. (43 3 N m) on EARLIER turbochargers and to 44 2 lb.ft. (60 3 N m) on LATER turbochargers with a *date code of G1576 or later. *Explanation of date code. Letters A thru L are the months of the year. The first two

Lower clamp and put a mark on cartridge assembly (6) and cover (3) for alignment at installation.4. Remove cover and "V" clamp.5. Loosen "V" clamp (5). Lift clamp and put a mark on cartridge assembly and housing for alignment at installation.6. Remove cartridge assembly from housing and put in a vise. 7. Remove nut and wheel (9).
When nut is removed, do not put a side force on shaft.
