EnginesTwo new connecting rods are given as service replacements for former connecting rods on 5.4" (137 mm) bore 60° "V" engines. The 4N9001 Connecting Rod is the replacement for the former connecting rod for the right bank of cylinders (as seen from the rear of the engine), and the 4N9002 Connecting Rod is the replacement for the former connecting rods for the left bank of cylinders. New piston cooling jets and a new type connecting rod bearing must also be used with the new connecting rods.(1) Use the procedure shown in the Service Manual to remove the connecting rod. Install the piston, pin and retaining rings on the new rod so the "V" mark on the top of the piston will be toward the outside of the cylinder block when the connecting rod and piston are installed. (2) Remove the bolts and cap (1), and install the new bearings (2). Put clean SAE 30 oil on the bearings, crankshaft journal, cylinder liner bore, and piston rings. (3) Install the 4N9001 Connecting Rods in the right bank only (odd numbered cylinders), and the 4N9002 Connecting Rods in the left bank only (even numbered cylinders). The wide faces (A) of the rods must be toward the shoulders of the crankshaft as shown.(4) Put 4S9416 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads, shank and seat of the connecting rod bolts. Install the cap and bolts. Tighten both bolts to a torque of 90 5 lb. ft. (12.4 0.7 mkg). Put a mark across the head of each bolt and the cap. Tighten each bolt an additional 120° 5° from the mark. (5) Remove the former piston cooling jets (3), locks, and bolts. Install the new 4N8986 Tube Assemblies (4), new locks, and bolts. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 4.8 .07 mkg (35 5 lb. ft.).
The new 4N9002 Connecting Rods will hit the former cooling jets. Install a complete set of the new 4N8986 Tube Assemblies even though all new rods are not being installed. This will prevent damage to the engine should a new connecting rod be installed at a later time.
(6) After installation of the new tube assemblies, the clearance between each piston and its mating tube assembly must be checked. Use a piece of .025"Ø (Ø 0.63 mm) wire to check this clearance when the piston is at BDC (Bottom Dead Center) position. If the clearance is less than .025" (0.63 mm), loosen the bolt and move the tube assembly away from the piston as much as possible. Hold the tube assembly in this position while tightening the bolt to the correct torque. Again, check the clearance between the piston and tube assembly. If there is still incorrect clearance, install another tube assembly and repeat the procedure until there is the correct minimum clearance.
