3600 Family Of EnginesCracks can occur during normal operation in the turbocharger cast turbine nozzle. See the illustration.
The cracks are not critical: * If they do not exceed 15 mm (.6 in).* If they do not lead to break-out of nozzle ring pieces.* If they run through the webs on the screw holes. [See (19) in the illustration.]* If they run over the entire width of the outer hoop [See (15) in the illustration.], and they are spaced at least 3 blades apart and do not touch the blades.
Not permissible are: * Cracks extending beyond 15 mm (.6 in), with the exception of cracks across the outer hoop. [See (15) in the illustration.]* Cracks extending of the entire width of the inner hoop and flange. [See (17) in the illustration.]* Parallel cracks with a spacing of less than half crack length.* Cracks joining together or branching and leading to break-out of nozzle ring pieces. Break-out of nozzle ring pieces can result in damage to the turbine blades.
If cracks other than those identified in the illustration are found, contact the Large Engine Center, Lafayette, Indiana, (309) 448-5317 for a determination on further use of the nozzle.
