Remove the flywheel housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel Housing - Remove".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Align the timing marks (1).
Illustration 2 g00793462Note: Both the 3408 and 3412 engines have a camshaft rear gear, but only the 3408 has a balancer gear.
Loosen four bolts (3). Install Tooling (A). Use Tooling (A) to loosen camshaft rear gear (2) from the camshaft. Remove Tooling (A) and four bolts (3).
Remove camshaft rear gear (2).

Remove bolt (5), the plate and balancer gear (4).

Use Tooling (B) and a suitable press to remove the bearing from balancer gear (6).

Install shaft (8) and bolts (7) on the cylinder block.

Use Tooling (B) and a suitable press to install the bearing in the balancer gear. Install the bearing so that the bearing joint is on the weight side of the gear within 20 degrees of the centerline. Install the bearing so that the bearing is 1.3 mm (0.05 inch) from the surface on the side of the balancer opposite surface.

Lubricate the inside diameter of the bearing in the balancer gear with clean engine oil. Install balancer gear (4) and the plate. Ensure that the side of balancer gear (4) with the weight is toward the cylinder block. Install bolt (5) in order to hold the gear on the shaft. Ensure that there is 0.15 to 0.36 mm (0.006 to 0.014 inch) end play between the balancer gear and the shaft.
Illustration 9 g01422515Note: Ensure that the timing marks (1) are in alignment when the camshaft rear gear (2) is installed on the camshaft.
Install camshaft rear gear (2) on the camshaft. Install bolts (3). Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 27 4 N m (20 3 lb ft). End By:
Install the flywheel housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel Housing - Install".
