(1) Torque for the bolts that hold the bevel gear to the housing ... 125 10 lb. ft.(17.3 1.4 mkg)Adjustment for the differential and bevel gear bearings:1. Assemble bevel pinion (5) so bearings (7) have zero end play. Then add shims (9) to give .001 to .003 in. (0.03 to 0.08 mm) end play for bearings (7). Turn the pinion slowly while making the adjustment.2. Put the differential assembly with the axle centerline in a vertical position with adjusting ring (8) down. 3. Using no shims (3), tighten the bolts for differential retainer (2) evenly to a torque of 30 lb. ft. (4.1 mkg). Then turn the differential to seat the bearings.4. Loosen the bolts for retainer (2) to finger tight. Turn the differential and check the amount of free movement (backlash) between pinion (5) and bevel gear (4). The correct backlash is .014 .005 in. (0.36 0.13 mm) If an adjustment of the backlash is needed reverse the lock for adjusting ring (8) so it holds only the bearing cage. Then turn adjusting ring (8) as needed. Put the lock in position and do Steps 3 and 4 again.5. Measure the clearance between differential retainer (2) and the cover.6. Install shims (3) to give .000 to .002 in. (0.0 to 0.05 mm) END PLAY for differential bearings (6).(Later 627 and all 637 Scrapers)

Turn the pinion slowly while making the adjustment.2. Install the differential assembly into the differential housing with adjusting ring (7) in a position to get the approximate amount of free movement (backlash) needed between bevel gear (3) and bevel pinion (4).3. Put the differential assembly with the axle centerline in a vertical position with adjusting ring (7) down.4. Using no shims (2), install retainer (1) and tighten the bolts evenly to a torque of 30 lb. ft. (4.1 mkg). Then turn the differential to seat bearings (5).5. Loosen the bolts for retainer (1) to finger tight. Turn the differential and check the amount of free movement (backlash) between pinion (4) and bevel gear (3). The correct backlash is .014 .005 in. (0.36 0.13 mm). If an adjustment of the backlash is needed, remove the lock and turn adjusting ring (7) as needed. Then do Steps 4 and 5 again.6. Measure the clearance between retainer (1) and the cover.7. Install shims (2) as needed to give .000 to .002 in.
