Cracks in the radiator support assembly.New reinforcing plates have been added to the radiator support assemblies to provide additional lateral support for the radiator guard and support group. The added lateral support will help prevent excessive deflection of the radiator core that can cause cracks in the welds, especially on scrapers operated over rough haul roads.
Adaptable To: The new reinforcing plates, part of the new 5T8195 Support Assembly, are not serviced. The new 5T8195 Support Assembly is a direct replacement for the former 6G3882 Support Assembly which is canceled. The new 5T8195 Support Assembly is part of the new 8W763 Radiator Guard And Support Group which is a direct replacement for the former 6G3950 Radiator Guard And Support Group. The new 8W763 Radiator Guard And Support Group (includes reinforcing plates) has been designed to accommodate the folded core radiator now used on the 657E Scraper. However, reinforcing plates can be fabricated and adapted to earlier scrapers.
Use Illustration 2 to fabricate two reinforcing plates from mild structural steel 8.0 mm (.32") thick. Use Illustration 3 to weld the plates into position on the radiator support assembly.
Before welding the reinforcing plates into position, remove the material in the area of the crack and grind the surface smooth. Weld the reinforcing plate into position as shown in Illustration 3. From the inside of the radiator group, fill in the crack with weld, tieing the radiator guard to the reinforcing plate.
