Adjustment of the Bearings for the Bevel Gear Shaft:1. Install bevel gear shaft (3) without the bevel gear (4) if the transmission is installed in the machine. Install bevel gear shaft (3) with the bevel gear if the transmission is removed from the machine.2. Install the bearing cage for the left side with a full pack of shims (not shown). Install the bolts that hold the bearing cage to the case. Tighten the bolts evenly.3. Install the bearing cage (6) for the right side without shims. Install the bolts (2), without the lockwashers, that hold the bearing cage to the case.4. Tighten bolts (2) evenly while slowly turning the bevel gear shaft until the end play of the shaft is zero. Evenly back off the bolts (2) until approximately .002 in. (0.05 mm) end clearance is between bearing cage (6) and four of bevel gear case.5. Use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance between the flange of bearing cage (6) and the face of the bevel gear case at each bolt. Make sure the measurement at each bolt is the same.6. Remove bearing cage (6). Install bearing cage (6) and shims (5) with a total thickness the same as the clearance measured in Step 5, less .007 in. (0.18 mm) to give the correct clearance (preload) of .005 in. (0.127 mm) to bevel gear shaft bearings. The bearings for the bevel gear shaft can be adjusted (preload) by adding or removing shims, under the right and left bearing cages, until a torque of 85 to 100 lb. in. (9.6 to 11.3 N m) is needed to turn the bevel gear shaft.7. Adjust the free movement (backlash). Adjustment of the Free Movement (Backlash):1. Push the pinion (1) as far to the front of the transmission as possible.2. Install a block of wood between the pinion and bevel gear case to keep the pinion from turning.3. Install a dial indicator so the tip of the indicator is on one tooth of the bevel gear (4).4. Move the bevel gear backward and forward. The free movement (backlash) is the difference in the measurement which is read on the indicator.5. Measure the free movement (backlash) at four places (90° apart) around the bevel gear (4) to find the location of the smallest free movement (backlash). Make sure the pinion (1) is held as far toward the front of the transmission as possible to get the correct measurement.6. The correct free movement (backlash) is .0125 .0035 in. (0.318 0.089 mm)7. If the smallest amount of free movement (backlash) is too large, remove some shims from behind the left bearing cage (not shown). Install the shims (that were removed) behind bearing cage (6).8. If the smallest amount of free movement (backlash) is too small, remove some shims (5) from behind bearing cage (6). Install the shims (that were removed) behind the left bearing cage (not shown). The adjustment of the bearings for the bevel gear shaft will not change by
