Personal injury can result if the machine moves while testing. If the machine begins to move during test, reduce the engine speed immediately and move the parking and secondary brake control to the ENGAGED position.
Make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and of obstacles.Test the service brake on a dry, level surface.Fasten your seat belt before you test the service brake. The service brake holding ability test determines whether the service brake is functional. This test is not intended to measure the maximum brake holding effort. The brake holding effort that is required to hold a machine at a specific engine rpm will be different for various machines.
Before you test the service brake, move the parking and secondary brake control to the ENGAGED position. Move the transmission control to the NEUTRAL position. Start the engine. Allow the engine to fully charge the brake system. The EMS indicator will no longer be illuminated when the brake system is fully charged.
Engage the service brake. Move the transmission control to the FIRST SPEED FORWARD position. Move the parking and secondary brake control to the DISENGAGED position.
Gradually increase the engine rpm. The service brake should prevent machine movement when the engine is running at 1550 rpm.
If the machine moves reduce the engine speed immediately and move the parking and secondary brake control to the ENGAGED position. Move the transmission control to the NEUTRAL position. Machine movement indicates that the service brake system requires service.
If the machine moved while testing the service brakes, contact your Caterpillar dealer.Have the dealer inspect and, if necessary, repair the service brakes before returning the machine to operation.
Secondary Brake Check
Test the secondary brake on a dry, level surface.Fasten your seat belt before you test the secondary brake. The secondary brake holding ability test determines whether the secondary brake is functional. This test is not intended to measure the maximum brake holding effort. The brake holding effort that is required to hold a machine at a specific engine rpm will be different for various machines. Note: The secondary brake is functional on the front axle only.
Before you test the secondary brake, move the parking and secondary brake control to the ENGAGED position. Move the transmission control to the NEUTRAL position. Start the engine. Allow the engine to fully charge the brake system. The EMS indicator will no longer be illuminated when the brake system is fully charged.
Move the transmission control to the FIRST SPEED FORWARD position.
Gradually increase the engine rpm. The secondary brake should prevent machine movement when the engine is running at 1200 rpm.
If the machine moves reduce the engine speed immediately and apply the service brakes. Move the transmission control to the NEUTRAL position. Machine movement indicates that the secondary brake system requires service.Parking Brake Check
The test for the parking brake must be carried out with the rated load in the body.Test the service brakes and the secondary steering system on level ground before you carry out this procedure.
Drive the machine onto an incline of
