Information:
Disassembly
1. Remove the clutch and upper shaft as a unit and mount it on FT996 Positioning Group, FT957 Legs and IP2420 Transmission Repair Stand.
UPPER SHAFT AND TRANSMISSION REPAIR STAND2. Use the two FT840 Brackets to hold the clutch outer components from shifting in relation to the inner components. The ahead drive gear (2) supports the clutch outer portion through the FT840 Brackets.
PREPARING TO REMOVE CLUTCHES FROM CLUTCH SHAFTS
1-Bearing retainer bolts (six), locks (three). 2-Ahead drive gear.3. Remove all but two of the bearing retainer bolts (1) leaving the remaining two accessible to a wrench.
REMOVING CLUTCH STUD NUTS
3-Stud nut 4-FT840 Brackets (two). 5-Clutch spider.4. With the two FT840 Brackets (4) supporting the clutch assembly, remove stud nuts (3) and the remaining two retainer bolts (1).5. Remove the clutch spider (5) being careful not to damage the clutch studs.
REMOVING ASTERN CLUTCH DRIVE RING If the old plates are to be reused, mark the clutch plates so they can be assembled in the same order.
REMOVING CLUTCH PLATES
6-Driven plate. 7-Drive plate. 8-Cylinder assembly.6. Remove the ahead clutch drive rings (9) and the ahead clutch plates in the same manner as the astern clutch.
REMOVING CLUTCH CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
8-Cylinder assembly. 9-Ahead clutch drive ring. 10-Plate assembly.7. Inspect the ahead and astern clutch plates and replace if worn or damaged. The clutch plates are installed alternately, beginning with a sintered bronze plate.
REMOVING PLATE ASSEMBLY
REMOVING ASTERN CLUTCH PISTON (FT841 Spring Clamping Tool Illustrated)
11-Retainer rings. 12-Ahead piston. 13-Astern piston.8. Remove the bolts securing the FT840 Brackets to the drive assembly and remove the plate assembly.9. After removing retainer rings (11), turn the piston assembly over and lift the astern piston (13) out. Follow the same procedure when removing ahead piston (12).
REMOVING ASTERN PISTON
12-Ahead piston. 13-Astern piston. 14- Springs. 15-Washers. 16-Pins. 17-Retainer rings. 18-Washers. 19- Springs.Ahead and Astern Clutches Assembly
1. Place cylinder (8) over the ahead piston (12). Place the springs (18) and washers (19) over the cylinder pins. Compress the springs and washers and install retainer rings (17).2. Place springs (14) and washers (15) in piston (12), under the holes in cylinder (8). Install astern piston (13) with pins (16) through the holes in cylinder (8), through springs (14) and washers (15). Use the FT841 Spring Clamping Tool to compress the springs to install retainer rings (11).3. Place plate assembly (10) over the clutch drives and install two FT840 Brackets to position the plate assembly. Install clutch ring (9) on plate assembly (10).4. If the stacked height of four driven plates (lined) and three drive plates is near the minimum permissible worn dimension [1.716 in. (43,6 mm)], install new driven plates. If the drive plates are scored, install new ones. The plates are alternately placed, a drive plate between each driven plate (lined), in clutch ring (9).5. Install cylinder assembly (8) and the astern clutch drive ring.6. If the stacked height of four driven plates (6) and three drive plates (7) is near the minimum permissible worn dimension [1.716 in. (43,6 mm)], install new driven plates. Install new
