for open circuits or poor connections:
At the disconnected harness connector for the EFR, connect a jumper wire between the signal circuit at contact L and the return circuit at contact C.
At the disconnected ECM harness connectors, measure the resistance between the signal circuit at contact J2-34 and the return circuit at contact J1-60. The resistance measurement should remain stable at 5.0 ohms or less.
While observing the resistance measurement, wiggle the machine harness at the ECM. If possible, have someone wiggle the machine harness at the harness connector for the EFR and at the round EF-C1 cab wall connector that is used to pass the EFR circuit connections through the cab wall. Expected Result:Either an open circuit / poor connection has been indicated or a short circuit to another circuit has been indicated by the resistance measurements. Results:
YES - The resistance measurements have indicated that the signal circuit or return circuit contains an open circuit or a poor connection or the resistance measurements have indicated that the signal circuit is shorted to another circuit in the machine harness.Repair: If the indication is that there is an open circuit or a poor connection in one of the circuits, check each circuit individually in order to determine which circuit has the problem. Check each harness connector that is used in the circuit. Verify that the circuit connections are clean, secured in the connector and in good condition. Check each wire segment between each harness connector for continuity in order to determine the location of the problem. The round 24 contact MC-C3 / EF-C1 connectors that pass the circuits through the cab wall are a good point to disconnect and check the circuits each way for opens or shorts in order to isolate the location of the problem. If the indication is that there is a short circuit to another harness circuit, check the connectors that are used to connect the circuits between the EFR and the ECM. Connection points can often be the location of short circuits due to moisture or contamination. Verify that the circuit connections are clean, secured in the connector and in good condition. At each connector, check the resistance between contacts in order to try to isolate the location of the short.Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.STOP
NO - The resistance measurements have NOT indicated that the signal circuit or return circuit contains an open circuit or a poor connection. The low resistance remained stable at all times during the manipulation of the harness. In addition, there is no indication that the feedback signal circuit is shorted to any other circuit in the machine harness. Once you are confident that there is not a problem of any type in the machine harness or with a circuit connector, proceed to Test Step 3.Test Step 3. CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE ECMNote: This check is intended to determine if the ECM is responding correctly to a change in the circuit. The 14 contact control circuit harness connector remains disconnected from
