The new L-shaped ring used as the outer seal in idlers on 963 and 973 Loaders.When you assemble these Duo-Cone seal groups, follow the guidelines in the referenced Special Instruction. The LIFE of the seal depends on CORRECT installation. The new Special Instruction covers both the rubber toric and L-shaped seals.
The new guidelines for installing the L-shaped seal are as follows:
Add a note to the applicable Service Manual referring to this Article.1. After installing the inner portion of the Duo-Cone seal group, install the outer metal seal ring on the idler shaft. Be sure the groove in the ring points out. See Illustrations 1 and 2.
Illustration 2. Installation of the metal seal ring for the L-shaped seal ring.2. Submerge the L-shaped seal ring into a container with isopropyl alcohol until all the surfaces of the ring are wet.
Use caution when you are using isopropyl alcohol. Avoid prolonged skin contact with isopropyl alcohol. Vapors may be harmful if inhaled. Use only in a well ventilated area. Do not smoke while using isopropyl alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol is flammable. Do not use near an open flame or near welding operations.Keep isopropyl alcohol away from heated surfaces exceeding 482°C (900°F).
3. With all surfaces wet, use your fingers to work the sealing ring into the groove in the metal seal ring. See Illustrations 3 and 4.

On 973 Loaders, the fill holes in both idler shafts must point to the left when installed on the loader. This correctly positions the shafts to prevent a premature failure. On 963 Loaders, point both oil fill holes to the right.
