Visual Inspection
At Engine
1. Check that all electrical connections are correct and terminal screws tightened.2. Governor Linkage Checks: a. Moves freely, not binding.b. Correct thread engagement of rod ends.c. Full travel available to FUEL OFF position.d. Full travel available to FUEL ON position.3. Magnetic Pickup To Flywheel Ring Gear Tooth Clearance, 0.56 to 0.85 mm (.022 to .033 in). See Service Procedure C.At Governor
1. Turn power on to governor. Do not start the engine. If the fuse or breaker opens as soon as the power is applied, the battery polarity (terminals T1 and T2) is possibly reversed. The actuator shaft can jump when power is turned on but must quickly return to minimum fuel position. Check the battery voltage at T1 (+) and T2 (-). The voltage should be 20 to 32 VDC.2. Disconnect any wiring or jumper on terminal T7. Measure voltage from T2 (-) to T7 (+). The voltage must be 7.2 1 VDC. If the voltage is correct, replace the wiring or jumper to T7.3. If idle speed is desired, connect a 50 Kohm potentiometer or a predetermined value fixed resistor to terminals T9 and T10 as shown in the wiring diagram. To calculate the value of a fixed resistor the equation is: 4. Put the Idle/Rated switch in the rated position or jumper terminals T9 and T10. Measure the voltage from terminal T7 (+) to terminal T2 (-). Put the Idle/Rated switch in the idle position or remove the jumper. Measure the voltage again from terminal T7 (+) to terminal T2 (-). The voltage must increase. If the voltage does not increase, check the speed trim pot if used and the Idle/Rated switch wiring.Initial Adjustments (Static)
8290 Speed Control Functions1. Rated Speeda. Set the Rated Speed potentiometer to minimum (fully counterclockwise).b. Set external speed trim, if used, to mid-position.2. Stability - Set at mid-position.3. Gain - Set at mid-position.4. Start Fuel Limit (if present) - Set at maximum (fully clockwise).5. Be sure the actuator is connected to terminals T3 (+) and T4 (-).Energized Governor Checks (Static)
The actuator or a 35 ohm, 10 watt load must be connected across terminal T3 and T4. Do not use a battery charger as the only source of DC voltage to terminal T1 (+) and T2 (-).Energize Governor
1. Activate 8290 Speed Control with DC supply voltage.2. T1 (+) to T2 (-) - measure voltage supply (20 to 32 VDC).3. T3 (+) to T4 (-) - measure actuator voltage (approximately 6 VDC).
