Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact the skin.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: The hydraulic oil will need to be removed before replacing the filter. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Torque Converter and Transmission Oil - Change" for the correct procedure. Store the oil in a suitable container.

(1) Oil Filter Cover for the Transmission
(2) Oil Filter for the Drop Box Note: Refer to Illustration 3 for the following steps.
Remove four bolts (4) and four washers (6) in order to remove cover (3). Note: Some additional oil may drain from the torque converter housing when cover (3) is removed. Ensure that a suitable container is in place in order to capture any oil that may drain from the torque converter housing.

(11) Transmission Housing
Remove center locknut (5).
Inspect seal (7) in cover (3). If the seal is damaged, replace the seal. Note: The hydraulic oil flows from the inside of the filter to the outside of the filter and debris can be found on the inside of the filter as a result.
Inspect filter (10) and magnet (9) of the filter assembly for large particles of debris. An excessive amount of debris may be an indication of possible failure. If large particles are found, consult your Caterpillar dealer for further analysis and additional guidance.
Inspect the oil filter and discard the oil filter. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Oil Filter - Inspect".
Do not drop or rap the magnets against any hard objects. Replace any damaged magnets.
Clean magnet (9) in clean, nonflammable solvent. Clean the magnet with a cloth, a stiff bristle brush or air pressure.
Install a new oil filter (10). Replace the magnet (9) and plate (8). Install locknut (5) and tighten 4L-4986 Locknut to the following torque 30 5.4 N m (22 4 lb ft).
Install cover (3) with four bolts (4) and four washers (6).
Replace the hydraulic oil. Fill the transmission to the "FULL HOT LOW IDLE" range on the oil level dipstick. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)", Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities" and Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Torque Converter and Transmission Oil Level - Check".
When the transmission is operating, check for any leaks and make any necessary repairs.
