Information:
Industrial, Marine, And Generator Set EnginesU.S., Canadian, and some COSA dealers are using the Product Information System announced last year. Most other dealers have access to this data system through telex inquiry into the Caterpillar Worldwide Information System. About the time the Product Information System was announced, the consists of engines with no Bills of Materials were added to this system. Many dealers are not aware of this.
Engines, particularly industrial applications, are often assembled with parts which are different from any existing Bills of Material. These are known as SER (Special Engine Request) engines. They do not have any Bill of Material part number because only a very few are built to this exact configuration. Engines that do not have a Bill of Material are easily identified by the absence of a Modification No. (except for a PL No. or PA No. for fire pump engines) on the 9L6531 Information Plate. See illustration. This plate is usually on the valve cover, but on some engines it is on the block.
An SER engine has no Modification No. (Bill of Material). The Arrangement No. on the plate for an engine without a Bill of Material number will list only the basic consists and will not be complete. To find the remaining part numbers of the groups and assemblies of an engine with no Modification No. or an engine with a PL No. or PA No., use the Product Information System for such engines invoiced to the OEM after October 1, 1984. Usually the basic engine arrangement is also listed.
Use the engine serial number to find this information in the Product Information System. Dealers who have the Product Information System should refer to the section "Inquiry Serial Number To Prime Mover" in the User Manual, SEBD0631-01. (If the plate has a Bill of Material No. in the Modification No. block, go directly to the Bill of Material Fiche.)
After finding the group and part numbers, refer to these numbers in the Parts Book. Sometimes it may be necessary to look in two Parts Books to find the group or assembly parts. For example, a 3516 Engine may have an industrial engine serial number (27Z), but because of the special OEM requirements, it may have some external parts for the 3516 Vehicular Engine (28Z) used in off-highway trucks.
Dealers who are not on the Product Information System or do not have access to it, should ask their subsidiary service field contact for the consists of the engine.
