Information:
Use the procedure shown in Special Instruction Form SMHS7633, "BATTERY TEST PROCEDURE", for the testing and charging of 6 volt, 8 volt and 12 volt batteries. When testing a Caterpillar battery for warranty purposes, make a record of all test information on the "CATERPILLAR BATTERY WARRANTY TEST SHEET", Form SEHS7629. Specifications
General Information
COLOR CODING OF LEADSPositive leads have red insulators and negative leads have black insulators.METER ZERO CORRECTORSMeter pointers must be set on zero before starting tests. This is done by adjusting the external meter zero correctors with power OFF.VOLTMETERThe desired scale of the multi-scale voltmeter is selected by using the Voltmeter Selector Switch. The 16 volt scale is used for 12 volt battery tests. The 8 volt scale is used for 6 volt battery tests.AMMETERThe ammeter has two scales. When the Test Selector Knob is turned clockwise, the amperage is read on the upper or 600 ampere scale. When the knob is turned counterclockwise to its stop, the charger will operate and the charge rate will be indicated on the 75 ampere scale (90 amps full scale).TIME SELECTORThe Time Selector is used to control the duration of the charge period when fast charging the battery. When the preset time for fast charging runs out, the charge rate is automatically switched to slow charge, where it remains until the charger tester is turned off.CHARGE RATE SELECTORThe Charge Rate Selector is a rotary switch used to select the desired charge rate for fast charging and slow charging the battery. It provides seven steps of control, at either 6 or 12 volt levels and high or slow charge rates.VOLTAGE SELECTORThe Voltage Selector is a three position toggle switch for establishing proper tester circuitry for 6 volt, 8 volt or 12 volt battery testing. The center position of the switch is OFF.TEST SELECTORThe Test Selector establishes proper circuitry for performing the Load Test and has a spring loaded lock to keep it in the OFF position. For Load Testing, the amount of load applied depends on how much the control is rotated in a clockwise direction. For battery charging, the control must be rotated counterclockwise to its stop.AC POWER SOURCEThe tester must be connected to an AC power source as indicated on the nameplate.PROTECTIVE DEVICEAn automatic resetting circuit breaker is used in the charging circuit to protect the rectifiers if an improper connection is made to the battery.
When charging batteries and during the Load Test, the battery vent caps must be installed to prevent the electrolyte from being sprayed (released) out of the battery. Make sure the holes in the vent caps are open and free of dirt. Because battery gases are explosive, always keep all fire and sparks away from the battery at all times.
Load Test
(1) Put the selectors for VOLTMETER (1), CHARGE RATE (2), VOLTAGE (3) and TEST (4) in the OFF position. Connect battery leads (5) and (6) to the battery posts (red to positive and black to negative). (2) Set VOLTMETER SELECTOR (1) on the 8 volt
