Use a suitable lifting device in order to install the pinion housing assembly. The weight of the pinion housing assembly is approximately 29 kg (65 lb). Install bolts (7) . Tighten bolts (7) to a torque of 300 40 N m (221 30 lb ft).

Lower the temperature of bearing cup (6) .
Install bearing cup (6) .

Use a suitable lifting device in order to support intermediate housing (3) . Install intermediate housing (3) . The weight of intermediate housing (3) is approximately 34 kg (75 lb). Install bolts (2) .

Place the differential housing in a horizontal position, as shown.
Install nut (5) . Tighten nut (5) to a position that maintains a zero to slight bearing preload. Rotate the pinion shaft and record the rolling torque.

Rotate nut (5) clockwise for two additional lugs in order to set the bearing preload. Install the lock and bolt (4) .

Use a torque wrench to measure the overall rolling torque at the pinion shaft. The rolling torque must be 1.4 to 6 N m (12 to 53 lb in) for new bearings. The torque for used bearings should be 0.7 to 3.0 N m (6 to 26 lb in).

Place a dial indicator onto a flat spot on the yoke, as shown. Measure the Distance (R) between the center of the drive shaft yoke and the location of the dial indicator, as shown. Record this value. Measure the backlash of the bevel gear at the dial indicator. Use the following formula in order to calculate the actual backlash of the bevel gear. If the backlash of the bevel gear does not meet specifications, disassemble the differential and the axle housing and inspect the differential and the axle housing.

After the backlash measurement has been taken and the preload adjustment has been made, the tooth contact between the pinion shaft and the bevel gear must be checked. Use the following procedure:
Put a small amount of rouge compound on the teeth of the bevel gear.
Rotate the pinion shaft for several revolutions in one direction. Then rotate the pinion shaft for several revolutions in the opposite direction. Then turn the pinion shaft in the original direction in order to observe the marked teeth.
The correct area of tooth contact begins near the inside end of the teeth. The contact area should extend to a maximum of 50 percent of the length of the teeth. See Illustration 13 for the correct area of tooth contact.

If the tooth contact looks like the marks in Illustration 14, perform the following procedure:
Remove some of the shims that are behind the pinion housing.
Repeat Steps 12 through 14 for the backlash adjustment.
Repeat Step 15 in order to check the overall rolling torque at the pinion
