Caterpillar AutoLube grease is a Calcium Sulfonate Complex grease with 5% Molybdenum diSulfide (MoS2). Excavators that are used in hot temperatures or cold temperatures or in high load or wet applications should use a Calcium Sulfonate Complex grease with 5% Molybdenum diSulfide (MoS2) and synthetic base oils. Caterpillar Desert Gold and Caterpillar Arctic Platinum are Calcium Sulfonate Complex greases with 5% Molybdenum diSulfide (MoS2) with synthetic base oil. Machines that are used in less demanding applications may use a standard grease with a minimum of 3% Molybdenum diSulfide (MoS2).High quality grease costs more, but high quality grease will reduce the total owning and the total operating cost of a machine by extending the life of the pins and the bearings. In comparison to standard Multipurpose Lithium Complex Greases with Molybdenum, greases with Calcium Sulfonate Complex thickeners provide superior protection against wear and galling.The minimum requirement for the grease for the swing gear and the swing bearing is not changed. Multipurpose lithium complex grease without Molybdenum diSulfide (MoS2) provides adequate lubrication of the swing gear and the swing bearing. Using a Calcium Sulfonate grease with Molybdenum diSulfide (MoS2) will provide increased resistance against wear and galling.Caterpillar Desert Gold, Autolube, and Arctic Platinum greases are formulated with a Calcium Sulfonate Complex thickener which makes the greases very resistant to wear and corrosion in extreme working conditions. Extreme working conditions will include very high loads, frequent oscillation, water, and irregular greasing. These greases also have 5% Molybdenum diSulfide (MoS2) for additional resistance to wear, galling and impact loads.Desert Gold and Arctic Platinum greases are formulated with synthetic base oils. Synthetic base oils make these greases usable in more extreme temperatures and synthetic base oils make these greases usable across wider temperature ranges than greases with petroleum base oils. Greases that are produced from synthetic base oils will experience a smaller viscosity change. This means that the grease will stay thicker during working conditions. The thicker greases are more resistant to being pushed out of the joint at a given temperature.Caterpillar greases have been developed and tested in order to provide the full performance and service life that has been designed and built into Caterpillar equipment.Due to the significant variations in the quality and in the performance of commercially available greases, use only the recommended Caterpillar grease.
