(5DS, 1LW) Truck EnginesThe 1998 Model Year (DEC97) Software is released for the 3406E (5DS, 1LW) Truck Engines. The DEC97 software is available on the Bulletin Board. The 3406E Flash File Cross Reference in the Find System has been updated to reflect the new ratings, serial number effectivities, Flash file part numbers, and interlock codes. These Flash files cannot be used on engines with serial number prefixes other than (5DS) and (1LW). Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET), Version 2.1 (or later), or Electronic Control Analyzer Programmer (ECAP) Service Program Module (SPM) NEXG4522, Version 2.1, must be installed in order to use the new customer programmable parameters. Multi-torque software applies to the top four gears unless otherwise specified [for example "Top Two" or "Top" (one) gear(s) only]. Also, if either of the two 500 horsepower "Fleet" ratings are flashed into an Electronic Control Module (ECM), the interlock code is permanently "frozen" and it is not possible to flash to another rating (different interlock code). A new ECM would be required to change ratings. The top tank temperature of the 1998 engines is 104 °C (220 °F), and the Fan On And Engine Monitoring Temperatures have increased by 5.6 °C (10 °F).
The following is a list of the new features for the DEC97 software:
Economy Model Vehicle Speed Limit (VSL) Reward
This feature provides the driver an increased vehicle speed limit for truck operation which meets or exceeds owner expectations. Owner specifications for engine speed, vehicle speed, shifting technique, load demand during acceleration, and idle time inputs are set with Fleet Information Software (FIS), Version 3.0 or greater. The ECM will calculate the actual averages and will compare to the owner specification targets to determine if a reward is justified. Operator review is also available via Caterpillar Driver Information Display (Cat ID), Version 1.5 or greater. The operator review will provide reward status, actual score, and the status of each specified parameter to inform the operator where additional effort may be needed.
Multi-torque Rating Display On Service Tools
When communicating with a multi-torque rated engine, the Cat ET and ECAP service tools will display both torque ratings for improved clarification of a multi-torque rating loaded into an ECM.
Support For Eaton AutoShift Transmission
The DEC97 truck engine software is compatible with the Eaton AutoShift transmission. The use of a SAE J1939 ECM is required to utilize the data link necessary for communication between the engine and transmission ECMs.
