Remove the crankcase access covers.
Remove the oil filler and the oil level gauge.
Remove the crankcase explosion relief valves. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankcase Explosion Relief Valve - Remove and Install".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Illustration 3 g00577005Note: Inspection or replacement of the main bearing can be done with the crankshaft in place. The stud tensioner tool group is used with Tooling (B). The stud tensioner tool group and the main bearing cap can be raised and lowered by using Tooling (B).When you assemble Tooling (B), always use the spring clips. The clips will prevent components from dropping into the oil pan. Link (5) connects to either the tensioner or pin (2).

Remove saddle bolts (6) from the main bearing. These bolts are located on each side of the engine. Note: Before you install Tooling (B), move the crankshaft to a position that is out of the way of the connecting rod journal.

Put supports (1) and tray (3) in position under the main bearing cap. Be sure to install the spring clips in order to hold the components in position.

Fasten brackets (4) to the bolt holes in the side cover. Connect link (5) to the tensioner cylinder. Note: Each bracket (4) has an adjusting screw in order to change the angle of Tooling (B). This allows you to better lift the tensioner cylinder.
