Correct Operation
To engage the barring device, hold handle assembly (4) and use a thumb to depress shaft (4). With the shaft depressed, move handle assembly (4) from disengaged position (X) to engaged position (Y). If handle assembly (4) can not move to the engaged position, DO NOT use excessive force to move it. The problem is that pinion shaft (7) is butt engaged (not meshed) with the flywheel ring gear. To correct this, use your other hand to rotate adapter (2) a few turns in either direction while keeping pressure on handle assembly (4). This will rotate the pinion and terminate the butt engagement. Move handle assembly (4) to the engaged position (Y) and release the handle assembly. This locks the pinion in place.

Illustration 3. Section B-B.Alignment Of Support Assembly
Support assembly (3) can be assembled incorrectly. Misalignment of the support assembly can cause the shaft to fail. To prevent misalignment of the support assembly, use the following procedure.
1. Loosen four bolts (1) that hold support assembly (3) to the body of the barring device.2. Pull out on handle assembly (4) and engage the pinion with the ring gear on the flywheel. If the pinion does not line up with the ring gear teeth, rotate the barring device until the pinion can be engaged. Lock the handle in position.3. Tighten four bolts (1).The new barring device is prelubricated, and should be greased to lubricate the barring device rotating shaft every 1000 hours. There is an opening provided in the flywheel guard for the grease gun extension which allows lubrication of the device without disassembling the flywheel guard.
