The ECM monitors the position of the speed lever, the brake pedal, and the gear switch in order to determine whether the machine is paving. In order to be considered paving, the speed lever must be in the FORWARD position, the brake pedal cannot be fully depressed, the gear switch must be in the PAVE (or LOW) position, and the ECM must be providing output current to the EDC's. If all of these conditions are true, the ECM will energize the implement relay, which will direct power to the vibrator, the grade control and the slope control.
