Procedure For Installation Of Tapered Roller Bearings
Chart A which follows, shows the parts needed for installation of tapered roller bearings in the upper hitch.
For installation of the new tapered roller bearings, use the procedure that follows. Separate the frames and remove all upper hitch components as shown in the Disassembly and Assembly section of the Service Manual.
1. Machine the upper hitch of the front frame as shown in Illustration 1.2. Lubricate the bore of the front frame. Use 5P960 Multi-Purpose Grease.3. Install lower cap (11). Install three bolts (4), equally spaced, to hold the cap in place.

Illustration 2. Location of parts.4. Cool bearing cups (8) to - 75°C ( - 103°F). Install the lower bearing cup. Use a hammer and punch to make sure that cup (8) makes contact with cap (11).5. Lubricate bearing cones (9) with oil. Install the cones. Install the upper bearing cup. Use a hammer and punch to make sure the cup makes contact with the cone.6. Remove three bolts (4) and the lower cap (11). Install the tools shown in Chart B and Illustration 3.
Illustration 3. Tools to check bearing preload.7. Install lower cap (11) shims (10) and upper cap (7). The seals must not be installed in the caps. Install three bolts (4) again, with washers (5).8. Use a torque wrench to rotate the bearing cones. The torque must be between 2 and 14 N m (18 and 125 lb in). Remove or add shims (10) until this torque is correct.9. Remove upper cap (7) and lower cap (11). Remove the tools from the bearing cones. Install seals (6) in the upper and lower caps. Install the caps with bolts (4) and washers (5).10. Remove the existing collar and bearing from their bore in the rear frame. Install bearing (12) and collar (3).11. Connect the frames as shown in the Service Manual. Install pin (2). Install the cover, bolts and washers.
