Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot the one of the following diagnostic codes is active or easily repeated.

Engine Derate Switch     The engine shutdown override switch is activated while any engine derate is active. (1)     The Electronic Control Module (ECM) will suspend any request to shut down the engine from the shutdown switches.

Engine Shutdown Overridden     Any of the engine shutdown switches are activated while the engine shutdown override switch is active. (1)
Note: Activation of the shutdown override switch will not disable an engine shutdown that is initiated by an engine overspeed condition.

Troubleshooting Test Steps    Values    Results    
1. Check for Active Codes and Logged Codes
A. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes.
C. Determine if the diagnostic trouble code that directed to this procedure is present.
D. Look for active diagnostic codes that are associated with the system for the event code that directed to this procedure.
   
Codes
   
Result: A code is active or logged.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A 971-31 or 1237-31 is active.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: A code is not active or logged.
STOP
   
2. Check for an Activated Shutdown Switch
A. Talk to the operator and determine the reason for the emergency stop shutdown.
   
Switch    
Result: The emergency stop shutdown was activated.
Reset the shutdown switch. Confirm that the condition for the emergency stop shutdown has been resolved.
Cycle the keyswitch in order to reset the control system.
Result: The emergency stop shutdown was not activated.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
   
3. Inspect the Circuit for the Shutdown Switch
A. Inspect the stop switches for evidence of damage that has been caused by vibration, moisture, or corrosion. Check the circuit for the shutdown switch. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Switch Circuits - Test".
   
Circuit    
Result: The circuit is damaged for the shutdown switch.
Repair: Diagnose the problem and then repair the problem.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
