Be sure no one is working on or close to the machine before starting the engine or moving the machine.Fasten the seat belt.
1. Move the travel activation control lever back to the locked position. 2. Move the hydraulic activation control lever back to the locked position.3. Move the hydraulic controls to the HOLD position.4. Check to be sure that the automatic engine speed control (AEC) switch is "OFF" (if equipped). 5. Turn the engine key start switch to the ON position. Press the to check engine oil, hydraulic oil and coolant levels. 6. Move the governor control lever to the LOW IDLE position.7. Turn the engine key start switch to the START position.8. Release the key switch after the engine starts.Starting Engine in Cold Weather
In cold weather, starting the engine may be difficult due to an increased viscosity of engine oil and reduced capacity of battery. Proper engine starting procedures are especially important with cold weather conditions. If the engine fails to start at the first cranking. return the starter key switch to "OFF" and wait at least 30 seconds before repeating the starting procedure.Repeated use of the air heater will rapidly discharge the batteries. If the air heater indicater does not glow red, this is an indication of blown relay fuse. Have the fuse replaced. Remove a fuse after disconnecting the battery negative cable.
1. Repeat steps 1 thru 5 in the previous section. 2. Turn the starter key to the "HEAT" position to preheat the air. After about 30 seconds, the heater indicater will glow red. This indicates that the engine is ready to start. Turn the key to the "START" position to start the engine.3. Release the key switch as soon as the engine starts.4. Return the governor control lever to idling position to warm up the engine. For starting below - -18°C (0°F), use of optional cold weather starting aids is recommended. A coolant heater, fuel heater, jacket water heater or extra battery capacity may be required. At temperature below - -18°C (0°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer, or refer to the "Cold Weather Recommendations, Operation and Maintenance Manual," Form SEBU 5898, available from your Caterpillar dealer.Starting With Jumper Cables
Batteries give off flammable fumes that can explode.Prevent sparks near the batteries. They could cause vapors to explode. Do not allow jump cable ends to contact each other or the machine.Do not smoke when checking battery electrolyte levels.Electrolyte is an acid and can cause personal injury if it contacts skin or eyes.Always wear eye protection when starting a machine with jump cables.Improper jump procedures can cause an explosion resulting in personal injury.Always connect battery positive (+) to battery positive (+) and battery negative (-) to battery negative (-).Jump only with a battery source and with the same voltage as the stalled machine.Turn off all lights and accessories on the stalled machine. Otherwise, they will operate when the jump source is connected.
When starting from another machine, make sure the machines do not touch. This will prevent damage to
