Requirements
The Transmission ECM controls the shift points. The basic components and corresponding requirements for shifting the transmission are listed below.Transmission Shift Control
The ECM must know the desired gear position.
The transmission shift control provides a ground signal.
The ground signal varies with the gear that has been selected.
The Transmission ECM also supports a J1939 shifter.Transmission Output Speed Sensor (TOS)
The ECM must know the output speed of the transmission.
One TOS sensor tells the ECM the speed of the transmission output shaft.
The TOS sensor provides this information.Torque Converter Output Speed Sensor
The Output Speed Sensor provides information to the ECM regarding the speed of the torque converter.Shifter
The transmission functions as a manual shift.
The transmission shifts to the gear that is selected by the shifter.Transmission Clutch Solenoids
The ECM must electrically shift the transmission.
The ECM uses two separate outputs to the solenoids in order to shift the transmission.
The transmission is always shifted one gear at a time.
The ECM activates the solenoids electrically in order to shift the transmission.Exceptions
The exceptions for shifting the transmission are listed below. The ECM will not shift the transmission into PARK until the engine speed is less than 825 rpm and the speed of the transmission output shaft is less than 1500 rpm. This prevents damage to the clutches and discs which could lead to early transmission failure. Do not attempt to shift from a forward gear to PARK if the speed of the transmission output shaft is moving faster than 1500 rpm. The transmission does not allow direct shifts between non-adjacent gears. The transmission does allow automatic sequential shifting and sequential downshifts. If the shift is allowed, the transmission will sequentially upshift from the current gear to the desired gear. To prevent clutch slippage and damage to the transmission, the transmission will stay in each gear for a minimum time. Logged Events
Four events are logged in the transmission ECM:
High torque converter oil temperature
Plugged transmission oil filter
Transmission abuse
Conflict of speed sensors
