This diagnostic code is recorded when the Engine ECM is not sending the necessary parameters to the Brake ECM at the proper rate. The update rate for parameters that are generated by the Engine ECM is not correct. The communication failure may be due to disconnected connectors or a faulty wiring harness.The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:
The incorrect software is installed on the Engine ECM.
The incorrect software is installed on the Brake ECM.
Incompatible software may be installed.
The fuse for the Engine ECM may have failed.System Response:The machine response is listed below:
Some implement functions may not work properly.Note: Ensure that the diagnostic code indicator is active and that the diagnostic code is active.Test Step 1. CHECK THE ENGINE ECM AND THE BRAKE ECM FOR PROPER SOFTWARE VERSIONS.
Use Cat Electronic Technician (ET) in order to verify that the versions of software are compatible. Expected Result:The proper versions of software are installed on the Engine ECM and the Brake ECM.Results:
YES - The versions of software are compatible. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NO - The proper software is not installed.Repair: Flash the proper software to the appropriate ECM. Cycle the key start switch in order to initialize the new software. Ensure that the diagnostic code is no longer active. STOPTest Step 2. RECHECK FOR DIAGNOSTIC CODES.
Ensure that the CID 0590 FMI 14 diagnostic code is active. Expected Result:The diagnostic code is inactive. The diagnostic code indicator is inactive.Results:
OK - The CID 0590 FMI 14 diagnostic code is not active. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time. The initial diagnostic code may have been caused by a poor electrical connection that was corrected when a harness connector was disconnected and reconnectedRepair: Resume normal operation.STOP
NOT OK - The CID 0590 FMI 14 diagnostic code is active. The diagnostic code has not been corrected. The ECM may have failed. The diagnostic code indicator and the diagnostic code are inactive.Repair: Check the circuit again. Perform this procedure again and ensure that all steps were performed. If all possible causes of the problem have been investigated and no problem can be found, you may need to replace the ECM. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact the Technical Communicator (TC) at your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time and expense.
