1. 768C-772B-776 equipped with a trailing unit. Be sure the door cylinder control is in the HOLD position. 2. Push the trailing unit control lever forward.769C-773B-777 Trucks
1. Be sure the truck body is lowered and the hoist control is in the FLOAT position. 2. The extended braking control lever should be in the forward position. All Models
3. The emergency brake lever should be in the forward position. 4. Move the parking brake switch (1) forward to the OFF position.5. Move the transmission control lever (2) to the desired direction and speed. 6. Release the service brake and depress the accelerator.7. Operate the engine between 1200 and 2200 rpm.
Do not exceed 2400 rpm or engine damage may result.
Emergency Brake System
1. If the low air pressure alarm sounds or the air pressure gauge is in the RED range, stop the truck. If coolant flow alarm sounds, stop the truck. 2. To stop the truck, depress the service brake pedal.3. If the service brake pedal does not stop the truck, pull the emergency brake lever. 4. When the truck stops, wait until the air pressure returns to the NORMAL range. If the air pressure does not reach the NORMAL range, have the air system checked.
The emergency brake may be applied and released approximately 3 times with a dead engine, after which the emergency brake will remain partially applied.Always block wheels securely before leaving truck unattended. After an emergency stop, do not operate the vehicle until a complete check has been made of the entire braking systems, and any necessary repairs have been made.
In an emergency, the vehicle can be moved in 1st speed range with the emergency brake applied. This may damage the emergency brake. Service the emergency brake before operating the vehicle.
Changing Gear Speed and Direction
The transmission will automatically shift up or down between 1st and the selected top forward operating range. The downshift inhibitor prevents the overriding of the automatic shifting, if the shift would overspeed the engine. The operator can manually move the shift lever, but the transmission will not downshift until the proper ground speed is attained. When changing direction, stop the truck and reduce the engine rpm to low idle. Move the transmission control lever to the desired direction. Shifts to reverse while moving will damage the reverse clutches.
Avoid striking overhead passes, electrical power lines and obstructions, always lower the body before moving the truck.
If load is frozen in truck bed, truck can be tipped over if dump is attempted on slope.
If equipped with a reverse inhibitor, the truck will not move backward while the body is being raised. The truck can be moved forward while the body is being raised. For more detailed information on the transmission and brake system operation, refer to Caterpillar Form No. SEBU5690, "Caterpillar Seven Speed Truck Transmission, Truck Retarding and Braking."
