Illustration 19 g01757589
If cracking has occurred, refer to the procedures that are listed below. (D) 10 mm (0.4 inch) drilled hole (E) Crack
Grind the welds or gouge the welds in order to remove the plate.
Take care not to cut into the top plate of the boom.
Remove the valve mounting plate.
Grind the smooth surface and increase the grit until the surface is very smooth. This will make the surface very smooth to a final grit of 200 or more.
Mark the end points of the crack with a center punch.
Drill a hole (D) 10 mm (0.4 inch) in diameter at the end of the crack. If the crack ends on the top of the side plate or the weld on the side plate do not drill past the top depth of the plate.
Use a back up strip that is 5 mm (0.2 inch) wide and 50 mm (2 inch) long extending from the inside edge of the side plate to 25 mm (1 inch) beyond the crack. Perform this process on the bottom side of the V-groove. This will ensure a full penetration weld. If the bottom of the hole is accessible from the outside grind a V on the bottom and weld upside-down without a back up strip. You can hold the back up strip by welding a rod for welding to the center of the plate. Place the strip into the groove and then pull the strip back into the proper position.
Weld the groove with a full penetration weld and grind the weld smooth.
Repaint the repaired area in order to prevent rust.
