Introduction
The following test is used to determine if the parking brake is functional. This test is not intended to measure the maximum brake holding effort. The brake holding effort that is required to sustain a machine at a specific engine rpm varies depending on the machine. The variations are the differences in the engine setting, the power train efficiency, and in the brake holding ability.Test Procedure
Check the area around the machine. make sure that the machine is clear of personnel and clear of obstacles.Test the brakes on a dry, level surface.Fasten the seat belt before you test the brakes.
Start the engine. Raise the bucket slightly.
Illustration 1 g06284235
Engage the parking brake.
If the machine is equipped with the direct drive transmission, move the transmission speed shift lever to FOURTH gear. Move the transmission direction control lever to FORWARD, to NEUTRAL, and back to FORWARD. If the machine is equipped with a power shift transmission move the transmission control lever to FOURTH SPEED FORWARD, to NEUTRAL, and back to FOURTH SPEED FORWARD. This is done to override the transmission neutralizer for this test.Note: Place machines that are equipped with all wheel drive into two-wheel drive mode.
Gradually increase the engine speed to 1700 rpm. The machine should not move.Note: 440 machines, increase engine RPM to high idle. For 450 machines, increase engine to 1700 RPM
If the machine begins to move, reduce the engine speed immediately and apply the service brake pedal.
Reduce the engine speed. Move the transmission to NEUTRAL. Lower the bucket to the ground. Stop the engine.Adjustment Procedure
Illustration 2 g02830721
Disconnect hose assembly (1) and remove fitting (2).
Illustration 3 g02830936
Install pressure tap (3).
Illustration 4 g06327614
Install Tooling (T1) to release the parking brake. Be sure that the wheels are chocked.
Illustration 5 g06327617
Tighten adjusting screw (4A) until the brake shoes clamp tight against the rotor (8).
Illustration 6 g06327618
Loosen outer jam nut and adjust socket head bolt (4B) until contact is made with the bump stop on the mounting bracket. Back off socket head bolt (4B) 1/4 of a turn and lock in place. Lock socket head bolt (4B) in place by tightening the jam nut against the inner hex nut on the socket head bolt. Tighten the jam nut to a torque of 44.7 2.7 N m (33 2 lb ft).

Back off adjusting screw (4A) half of a turn.
Illustration 8 g06327619
Disconnect Tooling (T1). Install cap (4C).
Illustration 9 g02840380
Install fitting (2).
