Refer to the Owner's Manual of the OEM for your type of controls. Use the following procedure in order to start the engine.
DO NOT USE ETHER (starting fluids) unless specifically instructed to do so. If the engine is equipped with an Air Inlet Heater (electrically or fuel ignited manifold heater), DO NOT use ether (starting fluids) at any time. The use could result in engine damage and/or personal injury.
Startability will be improved at temperatures below 10°C (50°F) from the use of a cylinder block coolant heater or from other means that are used to heat the crankcase oil. This will help reduce white smoke and misfire during start-up in cold weather.
When using ether (starting fluid), follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully, use it sparingly and spray it only while cranking the engine. Excessive ether can cause piston and ring damage. Use ether (starting fluid) for cold weather starting purposes only.
For engines that are not equipped with an Air Inlet Heater, use ether when temperatures are below 0°C (32°F). If the engine is equipped with an injection system for starting fluid, crank the engine. Depress the ether switch for three seconds. Additional injections may be necessary in order to start the engine.Note: If the engine has not been run for several weeks, fuel may have drained. Air may have moved into the filter housing. Also, when fuel filters have been changed, some air will be left in the filter housing. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" (Maintenance Section) for more information on priming the fuel system.
Do not push down or hold the throttle down while the engine is cranked. The system will automatically provide the correct amount of fuel that is needed to start the engine.
If the engine fails to start within 30 seconds, stop. Wait for two minutes in order to allow the starting motor to cool before attempting to start the engine again.Note: The "CHECK ENGINE/DIAGNOSTIC" lamp may come on after the engine is started. If this occurs, the ECM has detected a problem with the system. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Diagnostic Flash Code Retrival" (Operation Section) for more information.
Check all gauges during the warm-up period.
Oil pressures and fuel pressures should be in the normal range on the instrument panel. Inspect the engine for leaks and/or unusual noises. The cold start strategy will be activated when the coolant temperature is below 18°C (64°F). The cold start strategy will continue until the coolant temperature reaches 18°C (64°F), or until the engine has been running for fifteen minutes.If the cold start strategy is active and if the ECM measures engine rpm, the engine power that is available is reduced.A timer will disable the cold start strategy after a maximum time of five minutes.
