Personal injury or death may result from failure to adhere to the following procedures.Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.Clean up all leaked or spilled fuel. Do not smoke while working on the fuel system.Turn the disconnect switch OFF or disconnect the battery when changing fuel filters.
Do not fill the fuel filters with fuel before installing the fuel filters. The fuel will not be filtered and could be contaminated. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts.
The primary filter/water separator is located behind the left front access door.
Open the front access door on the left side of the machine.

Turn off the fuel supply to the fuel filter by turning the shutoff valve (1) clockwise.
Turn drain valve (4) counterclockwise in order to open. The drain valve is located on the bottom of the water separator. Note: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "General Hazard Information" that pertains to containing fluid spillage.
Drain the water and sediment into a suitable container. Note: Dispose of drained fluids and used filters according to local regulations.
Close drain valve (4).
Remove the filter (2) from the filter base. A filter wrench may be used to loosen the filter.
Remove the bowl (3) from the filter (2). Discard the used filter. Note: The water separator bowl is reusable. Do not discard the water separator bowl.
Clean the inside surface of the filter head and of bowl (3).
Inspect the O-ring seal for bowl (3). Replace the O-ring seal if the seal is worn or damaged.
Lubricate the O-ring seal for the bowl (3) with clean diesel fuel or lubricate the O-ring seal with motor oil. Place the O-ring seal in the groove in the bowl.
Install the bowl (3) onto the new filter element by hand until the bowl is snug. Tighten the bowl to 7.3 N m (5.0 lb ft) to approximately 1/6 of a turn. Do not use tools to tighten the bowl to the new filter element.
Lubricate the O-ring seal on the new filter element with clean diesel fuel or lubricate the O-ring seal with motor oil.
Install the new filter by hand. Instructions for the installation of the filter are printed on the side of each Caterpillar spin-on filter. For non-Caterpillar filters, refer to the installation instructions that are provided by the supplier of the filter.
Turn on the fuel supply to the filter by turning the shutoff valve (1) counterclockwise. Note: Do not start the engine until all service to the fuel system is complete. For instructions about priming the fuel system, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime".
Close the access door.
